David Coltheart was born in New Zealand. With his family, he moved to Australia at the age of 9 and then to the United Kingdom 4 years later. While at high school, at the age of 15, he became both a preacher and the editor of the school magazine. He attended Newbold College, England, where he graduated with a BA in Theology, and later Andrews University where he obtained his MA in Religion.

After returning to Australia in 1975, David started work in Sydney with the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a pastor and evangelist. Over the next 30 years, he lived and worked in various locations in New South Wales, Queensland and Papua New Guinea. He frequently spoke to audiences of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of people, presenting the message of Jesus Christ.

David has been involved in writing and public speaking for most of his life. For ten years, he was the editor of Archaeological Diggings, a bi-monthly magazine of ancient history and archaeology, and wrote many of the articles and news stories. He came out as a gay man in 2006 and as a result, lost his job, home and church. He moved to Queensland in 2007 and after a period of unemployment, he finally found employment as a technical writer and trainer in workplace health and safety. He retired from that job in 2015.

For the next three years, he was the volunteer pastor of the Brisbane Metropolitan Community Church, a vibrant faith community where everyone is welcomed and affirmed. He helped hundreds of LGBTIQ Christians reconcile their sexuality with their faith. He retired in 2018 and now lives with his husband, John, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Finding Out is his tell-all autobiography that details his journey coming out as a gay man to find his place within his family, his church and in society.
