Coltheart was born in New Zealand. With his family, he moved to
Australia at the age of 9 and then to the United Kingdom 4 years
later. He started his literary career as editor of the school magazine
at the age of 16. He attended Newbold College, England, where he graduated with a BA in Theology, and later Andrews University where he obtained his MA in Religion.
After he returned to Australia in 1975, he started
work in Sydney with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Over the next 30 years, he lived and worked in various locations in New South Wales, Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
been involved in writing and public speaking for most of his life. For ten years, he
was the editor of Archaeological Diggings,
a bi-monthly magazine of ancient history and archaeology, and wrote
many of the articles and news stories. After moving to Queensland in 2007, he worked as a technical writer and trainer with Performance Training until 2015.
Finding Out is his tell-all autobiography that details his journey coming out as a gay man to find his place within his family, his church and in society.
